Below are some of the most commonly asked questions about our EKG Technician Training Program. Please call or email us if you have any questions, or would like additional information regarding our EKG Technician course.

What is a EKG Technician?

EKG Technicians, or cardiovascular technicians, are an integral part of the management of patients with heart disease. EKG technicians use electrodes, which are attached to a patient's chest, and other specialized electronic equipment to obtain heart readings known as electrocardiographs or EKGs. They are able to trace and record electrical impulses transmitted by the patient's heart. The recorded data is then reviewed by a physician to evaluate the condition of the patient's heart.

The Doctor's diagnosis of heart disease is based upon the interpretation of EKG Tracings. EKG's are also performed before and after operations, during physicals, examinations of patients over 40, for patients with a history of heart disease, when patients are experiencing chest pains, and when the Doctor deems it necessary.

Students are encouraged to register early, as seating is very limited.

What are the duties of an EKG Technician?

An EKG technician adheres electrodes to the patient's chest, arms, and legs. An EKG machine is used to trace and record electrical impulses transmitted by the patient's heart. After data is collected, the EKG technician prints an EKG for evaluation by the physician. An EKG technician with advanced training performs Holter monitoring and stress testing.

Advanced EKG Procedures:

To perform a holter monitor, an EKG technician:

  • places electrodes on the patient's chest
  • attaches a portable EKG monitor to the patient
  • removes a tape from the monitor and places it in a scanner, following 24 or more hours of normal activity by the patient
  • checks the quality of the recorded impulses on an electronic screen
  • prints the information from the tape for evaluation by a physician

To perform stress testing, an EKG technician:

  • documents the patient's medical history
  • connects the patient to an EKG monitor
  • obtains a baseline reading and resting blood pressure
  • monitors the heart's performance while the patient is walking on a treadmill
  • gradually increases the treadmill's speed to observe the effect of increased exertion

Do I have to take a New York State License examination when I complete the EKG training?

In New York State there is no license, certification, special test or examination required when you complete your EKG Technician course. When you finish your EKG training, the Manhattan Institute will issue you a diploma from the school. This is what you will need when you look for work as a EKG Technician.

I saw my local college had an EKG course in adult education. Is this the same as your school?

No, Adult Education offered at Colleges and Universities offer a certificate program. Their course has not gone through the same State or Federal Accreditation procedures as the Manhattan Institute. A College will offer courses, which have been traditionally taught at Career Schools as a way to raise revenue, with no Federal or State supervision.

Can out-of-state students study in your school?

Yes, we have many out-of-state students pursue our medical billing and coding study at the Manhattan Institute. We do not charge out-of-state students higher tuition. All students pay the same price for their education. Although most of our students come from the tri-state area, and the five boroughs of New York City, Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx, Staten Island, and Manhattan, our Midtown New York City location makes it easy for students in the tri-State area - Long Island, Westchester, Upstate NY, New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania. We have had students from all over the United States study with us. In fact, we have had several students from different foreign countries. Our low tuition makes it a very good alternative. Many students combine study with a vacation. New York City is a great City to visit, and even a better one when you pursue an education at the Manhattan Institute.

Is the Manhattan Institute a College or University?

No, the Manhattan Institute is not a College or University. We are a licensed and accredited Career School. College and Universities are designed to give long training and a degree. Students enroll with us because they are not interested in going to a College. A College or University offers a program two to four years. Our classes are short, most are under two months.

So what makes a Career School better then a College or University?

We are better at what we do. We only teach Vocational education. A college or university lists career school programs under "adult education" and they give you a certificate, not a diploma. The Manhattan Institute is authorized by the State Education Department to issue a diploma to all our graduates. Many College and Universities even "farm" this adult education to a third party who rents space. Students think that the College has authority over the course, but in reality they do not.

At the Manhattan Institute all our teachers are licensed by the State Education Department. Our courses have also been approved by The Education Department to meet the highest standards.

Can a foreign student study in your school?

Yes, we have many foreign students who choose to study at the Manhattan Institute. We do not charge foreign students higher tuition. All students pay the same price for their education. Although most of our students come from the United States of America, we do have many foreign students who enroll every year. The Manhattan Institute is a New York State licensed and Nationally accredited school, so you can feel confident that our diploma will be recognized when you return to your country and pursue your chosen career.

Our New York City location gives our foreign students a wonderful opportunity to take in all the culture and wonders Manhattan has to offer, while pursuing there education. Our low tuition makes it a very good alternative. Many students combine study with a vacation. New York City is a great City to visit, and even a better one when you study at the Manhattan Institute.
